A Russian Expedition will attempt to climb K2 this winter. So far K2 has never been climbed in winter. The expedition is expected to last 3 months. It will start in December 2011 and go to February in 2012.
There will be a 16 man team in this Russian K2 Winter Expedition 2011 / 2012 attempt. It consists of: Alexey Bolotov, Gennady Kirievskiy, Vladimir Belous, Nikolai Totmianin, Valery Shamalo, Gleb Sokolov, Vitaliy Gorelik, Illias Tukhvatullin, Andrey Mariev, Vadim Popovich, Evgeny Vinogradskiy, Nikolay Cherny, Sergey Bychkovskiy, Igor Boriseko and Vladimir Kuptsov.
Alexey Bolotov has already climbed K2 in 2007. He was part of a successful Russian expedition that climbed the West Face of K2. This was the first time that the West Face had been climbed. Nine of the expedition made it to the summit.
Also part of the 2007 K2 Russian West Face expedition was Viktor Kozloz. He will be leading this expedition. Apparently he has been planning this for years.
Uzbekhistan’s Illias Tukhvatullin attempted K2 on the 2003 Polish expedition. They were not successful and met with fierce weather conditions.
In 1987/88 a Polish expedition attempted K2 in winter. They met with difficult weather conditions and ultimately they abandoned K2 without making the summit. During the 3 months that this expedition was at K2 base camp only 10 days were good weather. In one month on the Abruzzi Ridge they only managed to create one camp. All they needed was one week of clear weather to make the summit of k2 but the weather did not allow them this weather window.
