Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner aiming for historic summit of K2

Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner will be aiming to be the first woman to have climbed all 14 8000m mountains without oxygen when she sets off for the summit of K2 on Tuesday.

The first woman to have climbed all 14 8000m mountains was Edurne Pasaban. Initially Oh Eun-Sun claimed to have been the first woman to have climbed all 14 8000m mountains. But it later emerged that it was highly unlikely that she climbed Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.

The first person to have climbed all 14 8000m mountains was Reinhold Messner, who also did it without oxygen. If she succeeds then it will be of a similar accomplishment.
