K2 climbers reach camp 2

The climbers on the K2 North Ridge Expedition have reached camp 2 at about 6600m. There are only four left out of the original 6 who started from camp 1.  Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Darek Zaluski, Maxut Zumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov made camp 2. The climbing to camp 2 was very difficult at times with waist deep snow.

The other 2 climbers, Ralf Dujmovits and Tommy Heinrich, have gone back down to base camp.

Tomorrow the climbers will aim for camp 3. The weather ahead is looking calm for a possible summit attempt coming up.

The weather really looks like playing along well. If conditions permit that they take from now on camp after camp they should be on track for Monday as summit day. But at least according to the current weather forecast they could afford to spend another day at Camp 3 or even 4. I am not sure what’s better – having a day rest somewhere at that altitude or just push on in order to avoid too much time up there?

It does look good for a summit especially in terms of wind speed early next week. Its better if they can keep going unless there is good reason that they cant continue up. The effects of high altitude especially with no oxygen is worse the longer they are up high on K2.
