K2 climbers reach camp 1

The members of the North Ridge expedition have made it to camp 1 on K2 at about 5350m. They had travelled from advanced base camp from the glacier below K2 on the northern Chinese side of K2.

Maxut said that the snow slowed them down a bit when going from advanced base camp. Visibility was only about 100m. The aim next will be to get to camp 2 at about 6600m.

The date for the summit has been set for the 21st August. Weather forecasts are good for moment for that date with light winds and little snow or precipitation. But being the Karakoram this could change.

On the 23rd August their camels will arrive at base camp to take them back.

The expedition consists of: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Ralf Dujmovits, Tommy Heinrich, Darek Zaluski, Maxut Zumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov. Kaltenbrunner, Zumayev and Pivtsov have all climbed 13 8000m mountains and need to climb K2 to complete all 14.

Below is a screen shot from Google maps of the camps there. The climbers are at camp 1 at the bottom. All of this information is from Maxut’s GPS.

    The final push!
But why there’s sheer silence on south side? I suppose, Fabrizio and Baranowska are still there. What would be their chances to go up?

Fabrizio has just updated his website to say that he is in Islamabad. He went to camp 2 to see what the conditions were like. He said that the heat had changed conditions quite a bit. It reminded him of last year where there was rockfall and unconsolidated snow. Not ideal on that side of K2.
