North Ridge Expedition call off summit attempt after heavy snow

It looks like the North ridge Expedition to K2 has decided not to make a push for the summit. On Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner’s website it said that they were in retreat. The main reason looks to be the amount of snow that fell the previous day.

Also they spent 2 nights at just under 8000m. It would be quite normal for climbers to go down and not have further altitude effects.

Their next aim will be camp 3 and then back to base camp. Kaltenbrunner said that there would be a full report mid week. If conditions allow there will almost certainly be at least one more attempt. They have a climbing permit till early September. Now that they have 4 camps established they have a realistic chance of making the summit.

      Hi,

They have gone down to the ‘Chinese base camp’ at about 3800m, so have descended K2 and are off the mountain. Their next ascent will be important when the weather clears.
