North Ridge Expedition considering a summit attempt before 9th August

The North Ridge Expedition in the next few days consider whether they will make a summit attempt. Their weather forecaster has said that the weather will get worse on the 9th August, but till then the conditions are good for making an assault of K2’s summit. But at the moment Maxut Zumayev said it was too hard to tell if they would.

They have reached 7800m on the north ridge. They achieved their aim and have setup ropes on the way there. Tomorrow they will rise at 5am and will carry up 3 tents for camp 4. This will be the final camp on the ridge.

The advantage that the North Ridge Expedition have over those on the south side of K2, is that they have a climbing permit till September. Whether conditions prove to be better in late summer that than the south side of K2 is yet to be seen.

The expedition consists of: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Ralf Dujmovits, Tommy Heinrich, Darius Zaluski, Maxut Zumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov. Kaltenbrunner, Zumayev and Pivtsov have all climbed 13 8000m mountains and need to climb K2 to complete all 14.
