Old ropes help North Ridge Expedition reach camp 3 on K2

The North Ridge Expedition on K2 reached 7400m exceeding even what they wanted to climb. Fortunately for them, the ropes that Maxut and Vassily used in their 2007 attempt were still usable on the way to camp 3. This greatly aided their ascent. Also this meant that they did not have to use all of the ropes that they were carrying.

The weather did not turn out as bad as what had been predicted. There was strong winds and snow being blown down the mountain but it was still climbable.

The altitude did have it effects on Maxut though. Maxut stayed at camp 2 for a night. He said that he had a headache, which is not unusual for climbers who go so high. By staying at camp 2 for the night Maxut used this to help acclimatise.

They will be going down to advanced base camp after spending a night at camp 3. They will rest there at advanced base camp before making a decision as to when to go back up and make camp 4. The prospects are looking bright, according to Maxut.

The expedition climbers include: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Ralf Dujmovits, Tommy Heinrich, Darius Zaluski, Maxut Zumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov.
