Giuseppe Pompili has had to turn around before making the summit of Gasherbrum 1. He admits that he made a tactical error in not following Gerfield Goeschl’s group the night before. On the day that Pompili tried for the summit the winds were mush higher and the tracks had disappeared from the day before. He had relied on a weather forecast of near perfect weather which failed to turn out. Had he gone the day before the conditions would have been perfect. Thus it looks like a year full of planning has disappeared with no summit.
His comments on the possible success of an expedition to 8000m mountains could also apply to K2. “Once again, the peak of 8000 proves to depend on a combination of factors, including the strategy, the weather, the ability to choose who is in front, and the fate are by far most important factors than fitness,” Pompili said.
Pompili is hoping for another attempt next week but time is running out. Last year he made an attempt on K2.
