Deep snow prevents further gains on North Ridge

The North Ridge expedition has come across deep snow which has made the trek very slow and energy sapping. Maxut Zumayev, Vassiliy Pivtsov, Tommy Heinrich and Darius Zaluski have moved back down to camp 1 after going up as far as they could.

Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Ralf Dujmovits are camped at 6000m but this is 400m below where they want camp 2 to be placed. Tomorrow the other 4 climbers will rise to where Kaltenbrunner and Dujmovits are. They will bring equipment and tents when they do so. Today 800m of rope was laid. The aim tomorrow will be to get to camp 2.

Climbing in these conditions is complicated. Before lunch is the best time to climb. But it takes much energy because of the deep snow. But there is always the fear of avalanches because of the constant high slope of the North Ridge of K2.

Maxut said that the next 3 days are expected to have no rain so they need to make gains on the mountain in this time.
