The North Ridge expedition has retreated today when they awoke to a whiteout. There was a fresh 10cm of snow on the route. Maxut Zumayev reported that they had reached 6300m and were 2/3 of the way to camp 2, which is yet to be setup.
But they were pleased with their progress over the last few days. The section between camp 1 and 2 is a very difficult one and they have setup rope through most of it. Once they are past camp 2 the route will be easier.
They took 300-400m of rope back down the mountain and put it at advanced base camp. This meant that it was protected from the winds. They have now gone back to base camp.
The cook was ordered to slaughter a sheep for them to eat. Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner had been trying to convert members of the expedition to becoming vegetarian. But this has not occurred and some of the animals taken to base camp will be slaughtered.
In the next few days they plan to rest and recuperate as the weather sets in. When there is a weather window they will go back up.
The terrain map below shows all of the camps that have been established. At present they are at base camp.
The International expedition consists of: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Ralf Dujmovits, Maxut Zumayev, Vassiliy Pivtsov, Tommy Heinrich and Darius Zaluski.
