K2 North Ridge statistics

Adventurestats have a K2 statistics page where it is possible to see the successful summits of K2. In particular, it is possible to see the number of successful summits on the North Ridge. This is the route that Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and other climbers will be taking this summer.

In 1982 was the first successful summit of this ridge. This was done by a Japanese expedition. 7 climbers made the summit that year on the North Ridge. One climber died on the descent.

In 1983 there were 4 Italians who made it to the top in an Italian expedition.

In 1990 two Australians, Greg Child and Greg Mortimer, along with Steve Swenson from the United States were successful.

In 1994 there was a successful Spanish expedition up the North Ridge. Four Spanish climbers made it to the top. One died on the descent.

In 1996 there were 2 successful expeditions of the North Ridge. A Polish expedition had 5 climbers make the summit on separate occasions. Then a Russian expedition with 3 climbers making the summit including one American. One died on the descent.

It was not till 2007 that another successful summit of the North Ridge of K2. Two Kazakhstan climbers were successful after changing from another route.

In total there have been 7 successful expeditions up the North Ridge of K2. Of those expeditions 3 died on the descent after making the summit.
