Storms approaching, Kazakhstan climbers heading back down

Kazakhstan climbers Maxut Zhumayev and Vassily Pivtsov are going to turn back and head down K2 today. They have received fresh forecasts that storms are expected on K2 on Saturday and Sunday. They had reached camp 3 and spent the night there. Their plans were to get to camp 4 tomorrow. But with the new forecast they will abandon these plans and head back down to base camp.

Field Touring Alpine had reported that the climbing up for the Kazakhs has been much harder than it would have been earlier in the season. They said it took 3 hours longer than they hoped, the ropes were in tatters and there was significant rockfall on the way.
