Fabrizio Zangrilli has reported that all of the climbers up the Cesen route have come back to base camp safely. The climb down was not without its hazards though.
It took them 9 hours to get down from base camp 3 instead of the normal 4 hours. Lots of rope had been cut by the falling rocks. There was constant avalanche danger too so they had to keep an eye on that. And the anchors needed lots of attention. He used a ‘sweep position’ to get down using 100m of 5mm spectra rope. He called this move, “frankly a dangerous one.”
Fabrizio said he got big hugs from Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Ralf Dujmovitz when he came into base camp. All in all it was a very emotional scene.
