Summit push starts on K2

There has been assembled a very strong group of climbers who are trying for the summit of K2 in the next few days.

Three of the climbers have climbed 13 8000m mountains: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Vassily Pivtsov and Maxut Zhumayev. This is the 6th time that Vassily has tried to climb K2 and the 5th for Maxut. Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner will become the first woman to have climbed all 14 8000m mountains with no oxygen if she is successful. The first woman to climb all 14 8000m mountains Oh Eun-Sun used oxygen on a number of these and used it on K2 in 2007.

Kaltenbrunner’s husband Ralf Dujmovitz has already climbed all of the 14 8000m mountains. If he is successful this time then he will become only the 5th person to have climbed K2 more than once.

Christian Stangl is known as the Skyrunner. He has a number of climbing speed records. Last year he opted not to try for a speed record on K2 as the snow was too deep.

George Dijmarescu is leading a joint European and American team. This is his third attempt on the mountain. He was attempting to make the summit in 2008 when 11 people died.

Fredrik Ericsson wants to be the first person to ski down the 3 highest mountains in the world. Dave Watson last year skied from the top of the bottleneck to the shoulder and some other sections of the mountain. So if Ericsson does this from the summit then he will be the first to ski down K2.

Megan McGrath from FTA made a successful journey to the South Pole unassisted recently.

Fabrizio Zangrilli is the expedition leader for Field Touring Alpine. He claims to have been on the shoulder of K2 about 10 times in his numerous trips to the mountain. He has climbed on both the Cesen route and the Abruzzi Spur.
