Gerard McDonnell gets Silver Shield gold medal

Gerard McDonnell has posthumously received a medal for his bravery in trying to save Korean climbers on K2 in 2008. His family will receive the Targa d’Argento Pinzolo Gold Medal award in his honor. The Targa d’Argento’s are awarded to those that risk their lives for others.

McDonnell was the first Irishman to climb K2. He will be remembered for his heroism trying to save the 3 Korean climbers. To free them took him many hours. Unfortunately after freeing them, he was apparently hit from a piece of ice that fell from the ice serac above and died.
