Conditions on K2 are looking good for Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and her husband to make the summit. Last year there was difficult weather and deep snow higher up preventing anyone reaching the summit. This year is entirely different. Also there are 2 weather windows coming up where Gerlinde may make an attempt.
She started climbing shortly after arriving at K2. A stomach bug prevented her immediately going up. On the first day of climbing up the Cesen they were greeted by the Polish expedition at C1. They stayed the night there. This was at 5900m. The next day was a harder climb. There was a 150m steep gully before they reached C2. They found that many ropes from last years were still in place. Also the Polish expedition have placed new ropes.
The next day Gerlinde and Ralf went up to 7100m. They found that the conditions were far better than last year. Though there is plenty of snow at base camp, higher up there is less snow. It has proved far easier to get up than last year. They made camp at this height and setup some rope in a more difficult section.
After this they headed back to base camp, feeling confident about their chances of making it to the top.
