K2 Climbers turn back before summit attempt

All of the climbers attempting to climb K2 today turned back. Hopes were high that there would be a window of good weather for a good attempt at the summit. However, conditions proved to be tougher than expected.

It would appear that David Göttler and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner reached the bottleneck before turning back. But what was interesting was that they chose to also try traverse the rocks which is to the left of the bottleneck. They said that it was too late in the day, and would have taken too long to traverse if they were to make it to the summit and back down safely.

Christian Stangl was also amongst the climbers today trying for the summit. He is a speed climber and hopes to climb the mountain and be back down in 24 hours. He turned back because the avalanche risk was too high.
